Medical Ethics in EMS

Credit

The NJ Department of Health--Office of EMS (OEMS) has awarded 3.0 Elective CEUs for NJ EMTs. The National Registry of EMTs and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania accept these credits. NJ MICU personnel should contact their clinical coordinator for CEU requirements.

Description

The Medical Society of New Jersey (MSNJ), convened a special multidisciplinary subcommittee within its Committee on Biomedical Ethics to develop a statewide protocol and a standardized mechanism to allow physicians to write DNR orders for patients living outside of the hospital or nursing home. This program covers:

Concept and history of medical ethics in EMS resuscitation
Advance directives
Do Not Resuscitate orders
MSNJ policy and out-of-hospital DNR form/bracelet
Procedures for EMS workers encountering DNR documents in the field

Prerequisites

Participants should have an understanding of the NJ EMS system.
