Description
This session introduces EMS personnel to Ventricular
Assist Devices (VADs) which are mechanical devices that are surgically implanted
to work along with profoundly sick and weak hearts. In some patients, they are
a bridge to transplant. Other patients receive VADs as "destination therapy"
because they are not candidates for heart transplant. RWJUH EMS has been
recognized for its strong and effective partnership supporting the hospital's Cardiovascular Center of Excellence by
training EMS workers in the communities where its VAD recipients live..
Prerequisites
Attendees should be familiar with the prehospital care of patients with cardiac conditions.

This course is available by request to EMS agencies who may support RWJUH LVAD patients in their coverage area.
