Geriatric Education for EMS (GEMS)--Basic

The NJ Department of Health--Office of EMS has approved this program for 8.0 elective CEUs for NJ EMTs.  NJ paramedics should contact their clinical coordinator for CEU approval.

Description

This course was developed through a partnership between the American Geriatric Society and the National Council of State EMS Training Coordinators.  Encompassing the fastest growing segment of the population in the United States, patients over the age of 65 already make up a high percent of EMS calls.  In 2000 12.4% of the US population was over 65, however it is estimated that by the year 2030 the number will grow to over 20%.  More information about the course is available at http://www.gemssite.com.

Prerequisites

Participants should have an interest in treating geriatric patients in the prehopsital setting.
