Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support for Experienced Providers (ACLS-EP)

A letter of attendance documenting the hours of training (e.g., Category 2 CME) will be provided upon request for qualified healthcare professionals.
Paramedics:
- This continuing education activity is approved by the American Heart Association, an organization accredited by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS), for 7.25 Advanced CEHs, activity number 13-AMHA-F2-0175.
- NJ paramedics receive credit through MICU clinical coordinator review.
Application for formal nursing contact hours is pending.
ACLS-EP does not qualify for NJ EMT CEU credit.

Description

The ACLS-EP course goes beyond traditional ACLS by promoting critical thinking and clinical decision making strategies to enhance differential diagnosis and improve outcomes in patients before, during, and immediately after cardiac arrest and resuscitation. It is well suited for physicians, medical emergency team (MET) or rapid response team (RRT) members, emergency and critical care professionals, paramedics, and other practitioners who routinely function as a resuscitation team leader or decision maker. Veteran ACLS providers will find this one-day session a fresh and exciting alternative to the traditional ACLS Refresher course.

The course verifies the student's firm understanding of ACLS core principles and guidelines then employs active participation in case-based scenarios to enhance cognitive skills in differential diagnosis and treatment approaches to pre- and post-arrest patients with complex cardiovascular, respiratory, and other medical emergencies. Students who complete this case-based course receive an ACLS-EP card valid for two years.

ACLS EP has been updated to reflect science from the following:
• 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC
• 2013 American College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF)/AHA Guidelines for the Management of ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction
• 2012 ACCF/AHA Focused Update of the Guideline for the Management of Patients With Unstable Angina/Non–ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction

Prerequisites

Applicants must have current American Heat Association BLS for Healthcare Providers and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) cards during the entire course and be physically able to demonstrate proficiency with all BLS and resuscitation skills in class. Students must be well prepared. Conventional BLS and ACLS knowledge and skills are verified at the beginning of the course and students who fail the testing are neither offered remediation nor allowed to continue to the rest of the ACLS-EP course.
Candidates for the course are seasoned, advanced ACLS providers (e.g., physician, emergency or critical care nurse, paramedic, physician assistant, etc.) who either will direct or participate in an adult's resuscitation as part of their daily occupation or routine clinical activities. Participation in the interactive case-based scenarios relies on broad familiarity with internal, emergency, and/or critical care medicine.
Participants must have access to a computer with Internet access connected to a printer to do the precourse homework.
Participants must have access to the current (Guidelines 2010) ACLS Experienced Provider Provider Manual and Resource Text (AHA publication 90-1075) before and during the course.
